WHAT'S IN A NAME? - IITB 13.05

Chapter 13.5

What’s in a Name?

Da Vinci Code - The Twelve Tribes – Adam to Moses - Who’s your daddy?

First Word

Have you ever read in scripture theBEGATS”; whose kid was whose?  This reading is an absolute desert; I mean it’s dry and boring.  Was this chapter placed in the Bible just so we could know the family tree of Noah, or was it there for a different reason?   Is there a “Da Vinci Code” buried deep within?

STAY TUNED.

Bible Names

All through the Bible, children were given names that had a special meaning to the parent; I will list the duel for children between Leah and Rachel to give a little flavor to this study.

Twelve Tribes of Jacob. - Twelve is the number for Diving Power, Rule and Authority

1)      Reuben – The Lord has seen my misery. (Leah)[1]

2)     Simeon – The Lord heard that I am not loved (Leah)[2]

3)     Levi – My Husband will be joined to me (Leah)[3]

4)     Judah – I will praise the Lord (Leah)[4]

5)     Dan – God has vindicated me( Rachel’s servant Bilhah)[5]

6)     Naphtali – I have struggled with my sister and won. ( Rachel’s servant Bilhah)[6]

7)     Gad – What good fortune (Leah's servant Zilpah)[7]

8)     Asher – How happy I am (Leah's servant Zilpah)[8]

9)     Issachar – God has rewarded me (Leah)[9]

10)  Zebulun – My husband will treat me with honor (Leah)[10]

11)   Joseph – God has taken away my disgrace (Rachel)[11]

12)  Benjamin  (Ben-Oni) Son of my pain and misfortune (Rachel)[12]

As Paula Dean would say on her cooking show; “let that simmer on the back burner a while.”

Moses – The linage

The stage has been set for our tour through DRY places in the desert of the fifth Chapter of Genesis; a trip through the TENBEGATS” of the linage of Moses all the way back to Adam. This game is called “Who’s your Daddy,” and with a little luck you will see the Da Vinci CODE.

The Ten definitions sited come from four Bible Dictionaries; Eason’s, Hitchcock’s, Nelson’s and Tenny.  By the way; TEN is the number for Government; The Law

1)      AdamMan ( God called him Man)[13]

2)     SethAppointed ( to compensate - to replace Able who was killed by Cain)[14]

3)     Enos   Mortal (Mankind) Enosh[15]

4)     CainanSorrow (possessed; possession) Kenan[16]

5)     MahalaleelGod shines forth – (Blessed God - Praising God)[17]

6)     Jared Shall come down (Coming Down - Servant)[18]

7)     EnochTeaching; translated (dedicated - disciplined – committed - consecrated)[19]

8)     MethuselahHis death shall bring (he has sent his death - man of the javelin)[20]

9)     LamechDespairing - Lament[21]

10)  NoahComfort – Rest – Relief[22]

The Da Vinci Code

Did you see the code?  It’s been simmering in the pot on the back burner.  Look back and see; here it is starting with the meaning of Adam’s name and adding it to the next name all the way down to Noah.

1Man 2appointed 3mortal; 4Sorrow - 5God shines forth; 6shall come down 7teaching - 8His death shall bring 9despairing, lament, 10comfort, rest and relief.

Is that fun or what.

God does not write down stuff for no reason.[23]  If you are into numbers, the Bible is full of it.  If you love astrology, God has it.   If you are a nature lover, it’s there.  Do you like solving puzzles and finding secret codes, the Bible is loaded with it.  If you are just “Plain Vanilla”, it’s there too.

The Bible was written in the past for our learning today.  It’s His glory to conceal His treasures from Kings and it’s their glory to search it out.[24]  We are more than kings; we are kings and priest[25] and should search the scriptures daily to discover the glory of TRUTH.[26]  God is so good.

Just a little more

Each person in the Bible has their own story of how and why they were named, probably you do too. Many names are revealed in the Apocrypha; books that were not included in the Bible.

ü  Abraham’s name was Father of many nations.[27]  Sarah’s name was Mother of nations.[28]

ü  Isaac’s name was laughter.[29]  Jacob’s name was supplanted or grabber.

ü  Nabal’s name means fool.[30]  Abigail means my father rejoices… Nabal’s wife

ü  Lucifer before his fall was known as; the Son of the Morning – Morning Star – Day star – Son of the Dawn - Luminous – Light bringer – Shining One. [31]

ü  Devil; Diabolic, Slanderer.  Satan means Adversary – Accuser – The Serpent

ü  Paul; my name means Good Looking, Tall, Dark and Handsome, Strong, Courageous, Nimble, Smart, Sensitive, Caring, Compassionate, Cleaver, Funny, Imaginative and a Prevaricator.
