Chapter 1. 11
Pleasing God
It
would certainly seem plausible that even when
a
corrupt bad evil person does something good,
God
would be pleased. But to the contrary;
He
rejects it; a man or woman prostitute
should
not bother to GIVE MONEY to the church;
they
are both an abomination unto God. - Deuteronomy 23:18
First
Word
Today
when most people speak of being a Christian, it is essentially synonymous
with being an American or a hard worker or being a good person. It rarely means that you are a follower of
Jesus Christ and seek God on a daily basis; reverence His Holy Name and stand
in Awe of His glory and power. You can’t please God if you don’t know Him. The first thing you must do is seek His face
while there is still time and try to grasp this one and only God who has always
existed; to try to comprehend His All Powerful, All knowing, All Present, Inviable Spirit.
[1]
Pleasing
God -
Repentance
It
is important that you understand your fallen nature; repent of your
sins and publically share your heart before men; then be baptized, following in
the steps of Jesus Christ. Consider
yourself dead to sin. Repenting not only
means you are sorry for your past sins; but it also means that you will not do
them anymore.
God hates; a proud or haughty look; a
lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans
and plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief and evil, a deceitful false
witness that utters lies, one that sows and spreads discord among the brethren. God also hates; immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry,
sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions,
factions, envying, carousing and drunkenness.
There
are SEVEN Capital offences;
Anger,
Envy, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Pride & Slothfulness
Not everyone that says “PRAISE THE LORD” is saved. You cannot please God if you do not CONFESS and REPENT of your sins, CHANGE your direction and be BAPTIZED in His name; otherwise you are just a MAKE-BELIEVER going
through the motions.[2]

Pleasing God with Obedience
Submit yourself to God and
commit your work and your soul to Him. He would rather have your obedience than
your money; don’t refuse what His Word speaks to you. Obey God rather than man. Go into the workplace that
you find yourself, and share your own testimony of what God is doing in your
life. Share it wherever you go, night
and day; let the light of God’s love show through your actions.[3]
Although
we are FREE in Christ, we must still obey men’s laws unless
they conflict with God’s commandments; so pay your taxes and don’t speed.
YOU CANNOT
PLEASE GOD IF YOU ARE NOT SUBMITTED IN OBEDIENCE TO HIM.[4]

Pleasing
God with Our Heart
Don’t
let your heart be troubled or worried about anything, let the peace of
Christ dwell and rule in your heart and He will give you perfect peace. Count
yourself special when you are attacked. Count it all joy when you fall into
various trials for you must be doing something great in God’s plan.
NOTE: This is a test of your Faith and
Patience; it is not for God’s benefit, but for yours.
YOU
CANNOT PLEASE GOD IF YOU ARE STRESSED OUT WITH WORRY AND ANXIETY.[5]
– It’s in the Book –
Pleasing
With Our Mind and Thoughts
Prepare
your mind for action with a sober spirit; your mind can lead you astray
with its thoughts. Don’t be conformed to this world; transform and renew your
mind through the reading and obeying of His word. You cannot lean on your own
understanding nor the things of man.
God’s enemies are those that have their mind on earthly things. Remember your struggles and troubles
when you gave your heart to the Lord and how far you have come.[6]
Set your mind on things above and think on
whatever is true,
honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable, if there is any excellence
and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.[7] You have been
given THE MIND OF
CHRIST.
YOU CANNOT
PLEASE GOD IF YOU HAVE IMPURE THOUGHTS.[8]
– It’s in the Book –
Pleasing
With Our Spirit
The Seal of the Holy Spirit
marks OUR
SPIRIT with His promise which
is a deposit and a guarantee of our redemption. When we profess Jesus Christ as our Savior, we become saved and are
immediately FILLED with the Holy Spirit; but as time goes by something
happens.[9]
We leak; although
we still have the Holy Spirit, our tank needs to be topped off again. We are told over and over in scripture to be
filled with the Holy Spirit.
The
Holy Spirit has knowledge of the thoughts of Man and God. He reasons and teaches us the things of God and
then guides
and intercedes
for us. He has emotions
and through our actions He can
be insulted,
rebelled against, blasphemed, lied to, grieved and squelched.[10]
He
knows our feelings and thoughts and hears every word we speak. He knows when our actions are false, impure or
selfish and this
grieves Him. So the Spirit
has sensitivity,
feelings, and emotions and can be grieved.
YOU CANNOT PLEASE GOD IF YOU GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT.[11]
– It’s in the Book -
Pleasing
With Our Body
This
is where we WERE as non-believers:
Stirring up trouble, sowing discord, justifying
the Wicked and condemning the Just.
Pretense and Arrogance, wicked thoughts
and wicked imaginations, taking unfair advantage of our neighbors.
Addictions,
drunkenness, gluttony.
Wicked ways, evil plots,
deviousness, mischief, lies, false testimony.
Doing Wrong, cheating people,
stealing, robbery, violence, murder.
Sexual immorality, bitterness,
rage, anger, brawling, slander and every form of Malice.[12]
God hates
it when a man has sex with another man and a woman with another woman. He hates the actions of Prostitutes and Cross
Dressers and hates Bestiality; (having
sex with animals) [13]
When you think about the name of Jesus
Christ, think of Him as your “Covenant Partner”. You are Abraham’s seed when you belong to
Christ. You are in covenant with the
promises made to him till Christ returns and beyond.[14]
God wants you to know that He is in
covenant with you. He
has already fought the battle and has conquered death and made you MORE THAN A
CONQUEROR. You didn’t even fight the battle, but you got
the prize. When we SEPARATE from our old ways we become a new
creature, with new actions. Our body
becomes a temple of the Holy Spirit and we are to glorify God with our bodies.[15]
YOU
CANNOT PLEASE GOD WITH AN IMMORAL BODY.

With
Our Body; OUR WAY – The Math
This is how it all ADDS
up
when we do it OUR
WAY; it is obvious what kind of life that
develops out of letting our body have its own way all the time: repetitive,
loveless, cheap sex, a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage,
frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness, trinket god magic-show religion, paranoid
loneliness, cutthroat competition, all-consuming yet never-satisfied wants, a
brutal temper, an impotence to love or be loved, divided homes and divided
lives, small-minded and lopsided pursuits, the vicious habit of depersonalizing
everyone into a rival, uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions, ugly
parodies of community.
YOU CANNOT PLEASE GOD IF YOU USE
YOUR FREEDOM IN THIS WAY.
YOU WILL NOT INHERIT GOD'S KINGDOM.
NOTE; I DID NOT SAY ANY OF THIS; it’s all scripture “Word for
Word” [16]
- It’s in the Book.-
With
Our Faith
We
are to diligently seek God with our FAITH and believe
that He will reward those that seek Him; and to our faith we are to add
Goodness and Knowledge. Christ dwells in our hearts through faith;
grounding and rooting us in love, so we may be able to comprehend the width,
length, depth and height of the love of Christ so that we may be filled with
all the fullness of God.[17]
We are to live and walk by Faith, not by
what our physical senses are telling us.
We increase our Faith by reading and hearing God’s Word. We are counted as His Righteous children
because of our Faith, and without Faith; it is impossible to please Him.[18]
Our Faith is judged by our good deeds and
when our faith is tested, it produces growth
and endurance. Stand firm in your
Faith.
YOU
CANNOT PLEASE GOD WITH A DEAD FAITH.[19]
- It’s in the Book -
With
Our Conduct
Our
method of living, our life speaks volumes of who we are. The Methodist Denomination embraces not only a
specific method
of worship, but a specific method of everyday conduct. We
are to flee from anything that smacks of idolatry and spend what time we can
muster up meditating on God’s Word; taking care that we put into action what
God has written. We are to live out every line of
instruction that has been written; pursuing righteousness, faith, love and
peace; we are to fulfill all righteousness; forgiving one another and baring
one another’s burdens.[20]
The desires of the flesh
and the desires
of the eyes and pride of life are not from the Father, but are from the world. We are to NOT love the desires of the world. But in everything that we do, we are to do it
as if we were doing it unto the Lord. That means we do our work with excellence,
whether or not the boss is looking. We are to be Patient; to wait on
God’s perfect timing. By our patience,
we inherit God’s promise. We cannot
receive the Word into our spirit until we put away all filthiness and rampant
wickedness.
We have a
spirit of power, love and
self-control and we are to exercise self-control in all things, particularly
our youthful
passions and sexual immorality. Our speech
should be gracious and seasoned with salt. What we speak will come to pass.[21]
HE WHO
DOESN’T CONTROL HIS TONGUE IS WORTHLESS.[22] God said this; not me.
YOU CANNOT
PLEASE GOD IF YOU DO NOT EXERCISE SELF-CONTROL.
– It’s in the Book –
With
Our Love
God’s
Love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit so that we
can do everything in Love. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is
always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Three things will last forever; Faith, Hope,
and LOVE,
the greatest of these is Love.
Love is patient and kind; it is not
jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It
does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of
being wronged. It does not rejoice about
injustice, but rejoices whenever the truth wins out.[23]
Keep yourselves in the Love of God by
loving, being tenderhearted, forgiving and showing honor to one another. Show
hospitality to strangers; love, pray and do good for your enemies; thereby
repaying evil with good.
YOU CANNOT
PLEASE GOD WITHOUT LOVE; YOU ARE SPIRITUALLY BANKRUPT.[24]

With
Our Gifts
God
does not want us to be uninformed about the spiritual gifts. They were given to bear witness of Jesus
Christ and are distributed as the Holy Spirit decides. There are a variety of
gifts that were given for the common good of man.[25]
The first NINE gifts noted are: A word of
Wisdom, A word of Knowledge, Special Faith, Gifts of different Healings,
Special Powers, Prophecy (foretelling), the ability to Discern between good and evil spirits, Speaking
in an unknown language and the interpretation of an unknown language.[26]
It must be pointed out that the gifts were
what we call “given
in part”, not the whole. A
word of Wisdom, not all wisdom; a word of knowledge, not all knowledge. In other words the gifts are given as the “Spirit wills”
for the purpose “at the time” it is needed; not for ALL
time. It happened ONCE to
the 70 Elders of the OT and then they received it no
more.[27]
There are NOT two classes of Christians; those who
speak in tongues and those that don’t. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that
when you are filled with the Holy Spirit you will speak in tongues: that’s just
assumptive interpretation. It does say
the believer will receive a gift or gifts as the Spirit wills. Why do we put speaking in tongues at the top
of the list? Perhaps because it’s the
easiest one to counterfeit and somehow we feel a little more holy.
The next NINE gifts noted are; Serving,
Prophesying (forth
telling), Teaching, Encouraging, Contributing, Leadership,
Mercy/Compassion, Evangelizing and Administration. All the gifts are given based by our abilities AS
THE SPIRIT WILLS and not simply because we desire them.[28]
You
may have more than one gift; however
scripture does not support someone having all the gifts, but all the gifts are
found or present in the body of believers; that’s why we need each other.[29]
They
are all given for the common good for the building up of the church. We
are urged to seek the gift of prophecy which is not what you think; it is not
the foretelling of the future, but forth-telling; it is the praise and
proclamation of the attributes of God; His Power, Knowledge and His Presence. [30]
Can we receive
spiritual miracle gifts today? YES, as the HOLY SPIRIT determines.
NOTE:
Because we see very little of the gifts displayed, most believe that the
gifts ended with the Apostles. However,
I do not find anywhere in scripture that the gifts were recalled; in fact I
find that they will not cease until Jesus returns.[31]
YOU CANNOT
PLEASE GOD IF YOU NEGLECT TO USE YOUR GIFT.[32]

With Our
Works –
Fruits
As a kid, I tried to
eat the fruit of a persimmon tree before it was ripe; it was Bad
Fruit. Good works does
not make you a Christian; but because you are a Christian you will do good
works. Fruit does not fall very far from
the tree. The Bible is clear that you will recognize a Christian by his works; his
fruitfulness.[33]
There is a new fruit that is observable in the actions and reactions of
the Believer. In due season people will
observe in the Believer’s life the Holy Spirit’s fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. All of these attributes combined together make
up the ONE fruit of the Spirit[34].
Whatever is stored up in a man will
eventually come out. Evil gives birth to bad fruit.[35]
The grace of God teaches us to say NO to ungodliness and worldly passions.[36] God, through the Holy Spirit has given the
best and most specific gift tailored just for you to produce fruit that is to
be used for the building up of the body of Christ.[37]
While the gift is just for you; it’s not
just to enrich YOU, but to enrich the whole body of Believers
in the vineyard of Christ. You cannot be
fruitful apart from God.[38]
God chose the most specific and “choices of gifts” that will grow best
in your fertile soil: then He removed the stones in your life that would impede
its growth; He then watered it with his Word, then guarded it and watched over
the growth awaiting the harvest.
What
more can God do to help you to
produce a harvest? - Only the one who DOES the will of the Father will enter the
kingdom of Heaven[39]
– Live is choice driven -
YOU CANNOT PLEASE GOD IF YOU ARE UNFRUITFUL. – It’s in the Book –
Isaiah 5:1-4 – WHAT MORE CAN GOD DO?
1 I will sing for the one I love a song
about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside.
2 He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a
watchtower in it and cut out a winepress
as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes,
but it yielded only bad fruit.
3 "Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and
men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.
4 WHAT
MORE COULD HAVE BEEN DONE FOR MY VINEYARD THAN I HAVE DONE FOR IT? When I looked for good grapes, why did
it yield only bad? NIV
With
Our Testimony - The Gospel – The Word
We
are to hold fast to our confession of HOPE, ready and unashamed; sharing
the word, with those whose path we are striving to make straight; whether it’s
convenient or not. Go out and train everyone you meet, far
and near in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name of
the Father,
Son and Holy Spirit. [40]
My
son who is an executive in the computer industry, has an “online presence” that
anyone in the industry wanting to learn more about him and his accomplishments
will also get his testimony of “Why I am a Christian”.[41]
YOU
CANNOT PLEASE GOD IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A TESTIMONY.

With
Our Prayer Life
We
are NOT
to PRAY
to the disciples, the
saints, angels or any person living or dead, but to God only. As Christians we are reminded to NOT CALL
any man on earth ”Father”, but only God, our Father in Heaven.[42]
As our Father; our daddy, we can
approach Him with boldness. In
preparation for prayer we are instructed to speak succinctly, avoiding the many word and vain repetitions and get right
to the point with conciseness and brevity of speech.[43]
Pray for
more Believers to join you in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.[44] Ask God to give you the right words to say. We
should not only pray privately for ourselves, but also pray openly with others;
praying for their needs.
I met a man who had written a book
entitled “Are you running with me Jesus”;
I thought the title was a little sacrilegious, and told him so. He told me that throughout the day, no matter
what he was doing, he was in a running conversation with Jesus. He was Praying without ceasing according to
the scriptures.
TIME
OUT: Let’s talk a minute about Angels; from
the Latin angelus means "MESSENGER”; Angels carry out
God’s assignments. Let’s see what
happened in the book of Daniel. We find Daniel’s prayer was heard by God and
immediately an Angel
was dispatched; but Satan fought the Messenger Angel for 21 days in order to stop the answer from getting to him. When we pray without ceasing, we become part
of the fight to receive the answer; what if Daniel had stopped praying? God hears us before we begin to pray, and sends
the answer before we finish.[45] - SELAH -
I feel like I should not pick and choose
which scriptures I include in my Word Studies.
Some Believers have received the gift of a Prayer
Language while others operate
in a different gift. So praying in the
Spirit or in tongues is something that the scriptures address for those who
have that gift and I include it here. Your prayer language is communication between
you and God, and no one else. Note:
Tongues are the last of the gifts listed and are not given to everyone.
Praying
in the Spirit: I had a friend that told me once that He was singing and
praising God in the shower and all of the sudden he found himself singing
strange words along with his words in the understanding, but he thought later that
it was not real and would not do that again… He was singing in the spirit; his
prayer language.[46]
Pray
in the understanding tongue about the things you understand, then pray in
your prayer language about things you do not understand or do not know how to
pray about; The Spirit will make intercession for you. While
in public, you may sometimes feel like praying, praising or singing to God in
the Spirit; if so, you should ALSO pray,
praise and sing in the understanding.[47]
- It’s in the Book
Don’t get upset with me now, but in the Gospel of Mark, we find an example of
Jesus praying in a tongue when he groaned or sighed and said “Eph-pha-thal”,
which the translators interpreted for us as “be opened”. As best as I can
tell this is not Hebrew nor Greek nor any other known language.[48]
YOU
CANNOT PLEASE GOD IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A PRAYER LIFE.

With
Our Worship; Praise and Thanksgiving
We
are to worship the Lord God alone who made the heavens, earth, seas and
springs of water. He is worthy; for by Him all things were created.[49] We
are to worship him in Spirit and Truth; praising and blessing His name
continually.[50] In thanksgiving we are to rejoice and sing
with a joyful noise IN all the circumstances that we find ourselves.[51] (Not FOR
all circumstances.) We are to be
found in Church on the Lord’s Day stirring up one another to love and to do
good works.[52]
YOU CANNOT
PLEASE GOD IF YOUR LIFE IS VOID OF WORSHIP, AND PRAISE.
- It’s in the Book -
Our Responsibility
It
is our responsibility to take hold of the Good News that has been
entrusted to us and to share it wherever we go; day or night. We
are commanded
to teach it to our children and to our children’s children; generation to
generation.[53]
YOU CANNOT
PLEASE GOD IF YOU ARE NOT TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN HIS WORD.
– It’s in the Book –
Our
Discipline
Sometimes
we find ourselves in deep water when we as Christians do not obey the
instructions of God. Sometimes God has
to get our attention through chastisement and discipline, but He still provides a
way through it all. It is God that chastens us; chastisement comes
that we will not be condemned with the rest of the world, but that we will be
partakers of His Holiness.[54]
We are not to Hate or resent the trials
and discipline from God, because it is our trials that produces our
steadfastness in our Faith. When
going through trials because of your faith; count yourself as BLESSED
because He
only disciplines His children. If you
are not disciplined, then you are not a child of God.[55]
YOU CANNOT PLEASE GOD IF YOU RESENT HIS
CHASTENING OF YOUR LIFE. It’s in the Book
God
Is Pleased
Jesus
was sent that the world MIGHT be saved through Him. We as Believers have the promise that God
will never leave us nor forsake us and that our name has already been written
in a book of remembrance that our sins have been removed from us as far as the
east is from the west. We are no longer
under condemnation, but have passed from death unto life. Having gained eternal life,
we press on for the prize of the high calling of God for the reward that awaits
us in heaven. He is able to perform His
promise.[56]
Christ
preached a Sermon on the Mount called “The Beatitudes”; they do NOT
show a man how to be saved, they show the characteristics of someone who IS
saved. They are NOT
promises, but are a Description of the Believer; it is those that
are humble; poor in spirit and know
they are spiritually bankrupt and need a Savior,,
it is those who mourn over their own sin as well as others sin, they are meek putting
others first; they hunger and thirst for righteousness. They are merciful and
compassionate with a pure heart that has no hidden motives or agendas, willing
to be the hated peacemaker and know they will be persecuted for righteousness’
sake.[57]
The
Take Away
It
pleases God when we confess our sins and are saved. It pleases Him when we are baptized and filled
with the Holy Spirit; and when we go to Church and enter into His presence. When we keep His covenants and when we have a
quiet and gentle spirit; content with peace in our life. He is pleased when we
study His Word and renew our mind so as to be filled with His understanding, in
order that we may teach our family His Word; generations to generation. It pleases Him when we share His Word with
others, speaking words of Faith.
We please God when we are forgiving,
loving and compassionate. He is pleased
when we have wholesome talk, and when we Honor Him with our bodies resisting
Satan’s temptations. It pleases Him when we pray full of
Faith about everything. He is pleased when
we seek the Gifts of the Spirit and when we put our faith into action through good
works. A faith without works is a dead faith.[58]
WE CAN PLEASE GOD;
IF WE WANT TO
