THE WILL OF GOD - IITB 01.14

Chapter 1. 14

The Will of God

Do we have anything to do

with the will of God

being accomplished?

I’ll see you tomorrow, Lord Willing and the creeks don’t rise.  How many times have you heard that? At first blush, it would seem that if God “willed it”, it wouldn’t matter if the creeks rise or not.

Can the CREEKS OF IGNORANCE in our life stop the “will of God?”

Is it possible to know the will of God?

If it’s God’s Will

James says, look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.”  How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow?  Your life is like the morning fog; it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.   What you ought to say is; “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”  Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.[1]

This is a wonderful Bible verse, but it has become a stumbling block to us because we lack the knowledge of His Word.  We can know the will of God simply by studying the scriptures.  If God has already told us “His will” about a matter, then when we pray, “If it be your will”, our prayer becomes a prayer of doubt.  If He said it, then claim it as yours; a done deal.

I can find a dozen verses that say God wants us to be healed and I plan to reveal them ALL to you in a future study.[2]  So when we pray for the sick to be healed, we shouldn’t say “if it be your will(IT IS HIS WILL).  Quote the scriptures and thank Him for the answer.  We shouldn’t pray a prayer of doubt.  That’s double minded and with that, we should not expect to receive anything.[3]   How often do we say; “Lord Willing, I’ll see you at Church Sunday,” That’s NUTS; It is God’s Will that on the Lord’s Day, you go to a Bible believing church.[4]  However I do not close the door on God’s Sovereignty and His perfect WILL, He might want me to go to your church next Sunday.

God’s Sovereignty

God is sovereign, which means He can do anything He wants to do with His creations. EXCEPT He cannot lie or change His nature or change His laws or break His covenant.[5]  He has given us FREE WILL which means our life is Decision Driven by our own corrupt spirit.  If God’s will was done on earth, everyone would be saved and there would be no evil or crime.  God’s will IS NOT being done on earth   We can KNOW and DO God’s will by studying His Word. - It’s in the Book

Our Authority

It is God’s will for us to have authority over the earth  Satan took the authority from Adam so  God sent His Son Jesus with the authority to take the earth back from Satan and to redeem us.[6]

Genesis 1:28 – Gods will; have authority over the life on earth.

28 And God blessed them: and God said unto them,

Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and HAVE DOMINION over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and OVER EVERY LIVING THING THAT MOVES upon the earth. ASV

Two families

There are two families on earth; those of Satan and those of Christ.  By our very nature we are of the family of Satan because of the fall of Adam.  It is God’s will that we become a part of the family of God.   It is God’s will that every knee bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.[7]

Ephesians 2:3 – By nature we are the objects of God’s wrath

3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, WE WERE BY NATURE OBJECTS OF WRATH NIV

Satan’s Works

We are in a spiritual struggle against powers of the dark world, against spiritual forces of evil.   It is Satan that binds up our life and it’s the Holy Spirit that intercedes for us. God’s “WILL” is not being done on earth.  It is God’s will that we know our authority over Satan and know the Lord’s will for our life.   It is God’s will that the evil works of Satan be destroyed.  He wants us to resist Satan which will cause the evil one to flee from us.   It is God’s will that our enemies be defeated in our everyday walk of life.[8]

James 4:7 – It is God’s “will” that we resist Satan
7 So humble yourselves before God.

RESIST THE DEVIL, and he will flee from you. (NLT)

Look to the Son

This word study was hard for me since God is Sovereign and can do anything He wants to.  But as I studied I saw that there are some things that God cannot do. - He cannot violate His own character, or what He has already said, and that He cannot lie or break His covenant or His laws. He cannot change.  Jesus and God are one person; Jesus is God in the physical flesh.  Jesus cannot change.  So to know God’s will, it would seem that we should look at His Son and what He did as He did only what He saw the Father do.[9]

Jesus told the disciples to pray that “God’s will” would be done in earth, because obviously it’s not being done.  This is a hard concept, but God’s perfect will cannot be done until Jesus Christ returns.

John 10:37-38 – Jesus did the works of God
37 Don’t believe me unless
I CARRY OUT MY FATHER’S WORK.
38 ...if I do his work, believe in the evidence of the miraculous works I have done, even if you don’t believe me. Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father.” (NLT)

Renew the mind – God’s will

Our minds are conformed to the things of this world; we are ALL corrupt, there is not one person that is good; NOT ONE.   The only way to transform our mind is to be a student of God’s Word; The Bible.   It is God’s will that ALL be saved; those living and those not yet born.  He wants us to receive a new heart, one of compassion toward others.  It is God’s will that our minds be renewed and be set free from ignorance of His truth and that His words be unfolded and the understanding of His mysteries be revealed to us, and that our eyes be full of light.

It is God’s will for us to have a gentle and quite spirit; to be content and not worry, to have perfect peace in our life.  In short, it is the will of God for our minds to be renewed and for us to be new creations and not only for us, but for our children too.[10]

Romans 12:2 – God’s will is for our minds to be transformed
2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but

LET GOD TRANSFORM YOU INTO A NEW PERSON

BY CHANGING THE WAY YOU THINK. Then you will learn to know GOD’S WILL FOR YOU, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (NLT)

Study His Word – God’s Will

It’s God’s will that we unpack His word accurately and with truth.  He wants to light up our pathway with wisdom and knowledge.[11]

2 Timothy 2:15 – It is God’s will that we study His Word correctly
15 Work hard
(study the Book) so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and WHO CORRECTLY EXPLAINS THE WORD OF TRUTH. (NLT)

Teach your family – God’s Will

It is God’s will that we DAILY teach the scriptures to our family, teaching our children from the time they get up till the time they go to bed.   This is called “GENERATION TO GENERATION” teaching.  This is where the nation of Israel failed so many times; allowing Satan to get a foothold in their lives.  The more we teach our family the more we learn ourselves.  It is God’s will that the comforter; the counselor, help us as we study and teach.[12]

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 – It is God’s will you teach your children

6 these words which I COMMAND YOU today shall be in your heart.

7 You shall TEACH THEM DILIGENTLY TO YOUR CHILDREN, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates NKJV

Honor Him – God’s Will

It is God’s will that we HONOR HIM with our bodies; with our thinking and with our actions.  The Book says; “You are not your own; you were bought at a price, THEREFORE HONOR GOD WITH YOUR BODY.[13]

Forgive Others – God’s Will

It is God’s will that we are kind, compassionate and forgiving to others.  He wants us to not only forgive, but to forget; not replay and rehearse the wrong deeds again and again in front of others.[14]

Proverbs 17:9 – God’s will is for us to forgive; not run our mouths.

9 He who covers over an offense promotes love, but

WHOEVER REPEATS THE MATTER SEPARATES CLOSE FRIENDS NIV

Love Others – God’s Will

When folks speak hateful words toward us, it is God’s will that we TRY to love them back, making no opening for Satan to get a foothold in our life.  The Holy Spirit pours love into our hearts giving us power over our enemy Satan; driving out all of our fear.  The virtues of love are patience, kindness, protecting, trusting, hoping and never failing. - Love is not burdensome and it does no harm – Love walks in obedience to God’s Word.  It is God’s will and command that we love one another as ourselves.   Whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is love.[15]

John 13:34-35 – A new command; Love one another

34 "A new command I give you:

LOVE ONE ANOTHER. AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples,

if you love one another." NIV

Be compassionate – God’s Will

When we receive the Holy Spirit, our sinful nature is changed; we no longer wink at sexual immorality or get drunk, have fits of jealousy and rage.  We no longer have selfish ambitions or sow seeds of discord.  It is God’s will for us is to have peace and compassion in our hearts; forgiving one another.   It is God’s will for us is to reverence God; have tolerance and to pray for our enemies.[16]

Ephesians 4:32 – God’s will; be kind, compassionate & forgiving

32 BE KIND and COMPASSIONATE to one another, FORGIVING each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. NIV

Wholesome Talk – God’s Will

Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit by what comes out of your mouth.  It’s God’s Will that we put away course jokes, profanity; put away rage and anger, put away brawling and slander.[17]

Ephesians 4:29-30 – God’s will that we not grieve the Holy Spirit

29 Do not let any UNWHOLESOME TALK come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs,

30 And DO NOT GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  NIV

Abundant life – God’s will

God has set limits on our life span, and our Life Decisions can shorten the time He has decreed.  It is Gods will that we live 60 or 70 years on this earth and even more if we follow His word.

It is God’s will that we have an ABUNDANT LIFE, not only here on earth, but eternal life in heaven with Him.

It is God’s will that we be HEALED from diseases, both physically and mentally and have a HEALTHY LIFE.[18]

John 10:10 – God wants us to have abundant life

10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy:

I AM COME THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE LIFE, and that they might HAVE IT MORE ABUNDANTLY. KJV

Prosperity – God’s Will

It is God’s will that we prosper in all things and be in good health “directly proportional” to our faith being enlarged by the studying of His word.  He wants for us to have a full life; our heart steadfast; our name honored and our children blessed.[19]

It is God’s will that we prosper in ways we can only dream of, so that we can be a river of life to others.  He wants the word to take root as we send it out and that it grows to a full harvest causing others to prosper.[20]  Where the Word is taught, the standard of living is raised.

Joshua 1:8 – Its God’s will that we STUDY His Book to prosper

8 THIS BOOK OF THE LAW shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall MEDITATE IN IT DAY AND NIGHT, that you may observe

TO DO according to all that is written in it.

For THEN you will make your way prosperous,

and THEN you will have good success. NKJV

Giving – God’s Will

It’s God’s will for us to prosper so that we can SHARE what we have with others.  It’s God’s will that we support missions as well as our church and organizations that help and witness to the needy. (They should do both; help and teach.)  We should set aside some money every week from our increases that we receive.  God wants to give back to us directly proportionally to what we have given plus more.

It’s God’s will that we TEST HIM with our giving; just to show us we can’t out give Him.  If you use a spoon with your giving, God will use a shovel to bless you back.[21]

Malachi 3:10 – God says to test Him in your giving

10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. TEST ME IN THIS," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw

OPEN THE FLOODGATES OF HEAVEN

and pour out so much blessing

that you will not have room enough for it.  NIV

Healing – God’s Will

The Scriptures tell about a leper, who said to Jesus, “You can heal me IF YOU WANT TO”; Jesus replied, I WANT TO”.  God wants us well, not sick. His Word has made healing available for the whole body both mentally and physically; lay hands on the sick and pray for their healing.[22]

Mark 16:17-18 – God wants us to lay hands on the sick

17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; …

18 …THEY WILL PLACE THEIR HANDS ON SICK PEOPLE,

AND THEY WILL GET WELL."

Prayer – God’s Will

It is God’s will that we approach His throne room with confidence and believe that He will listen and reward us; He will not reject the believer’s prayer.  It is God’s will that we come to him with ALL our needs, not just the big ones.  He wants to be involved at every level of our life.   He wants us to pray for the healing of a cold; our rent money; a job; and a wife.  He wants to hear from us all the time

It is God’s will that we have a continuous walking conversation with Him.

It is God’s will that we believe our answers have already been dispatched before we utter the first word and that a spiritual battle is taking place to delay or stop the promised word from reaching is.[23]

So continue to pray often until you get your answer.

Daniel 10:12-13 – God hears our words before we begin to speak

12 "Do not fear, Daniel, for FROM THE FIRST DAY that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God,

YOUR WORDS WERE HEARD; and I have come because of your words.

13 THE PRINCE OF PERSIA WITHSTOOD ME TWENTY-ONE DAYS; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, NKJV

Faith – God’s Will

Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.  We should not expect to receive anything from the Lord is we are in doubt and unbelief.  He does not want us to be double minded, being blown about by every wave of adversity that comes against us.

It is God’s will that our faith grows as we study His word

It is God’s will that we believe and use the faith we already have and seek to enlarge it.

It is Gods will that we “speak” to the mountains and adversities in our life to be removed.

Faith footnotes [24]

James 1:6-8 – He does not want you to be double minded.

6 But when he asks, he must BELIEVE AND NOT DOUBT, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord;

8 he is a DOUBLE-MINDED man, unstable in all he does.  NIV

Speak Faith – God’s Will

God wants you to be fully persuaded that He is able to do what His word says.  The Words you speak are what you believe.  When we study God’s Word we fill up our heart with His thoughts.  When we study enough our heart overflows and it starts coming out of our mouths.[25] There is a computer term called GIGO; Garbage In; Garbage Out.  The Words you speak are what you are

Matthew 12:35 – What’s in you comes out

35 A good man OUT OF THE GOOD TREASURE OF THE HEART BRINGS FORTH GOOD THINGS: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. KJV

Seek the Gifts – God’s will

It is God’s will that you seek the Gifts of the Holy Spirit so that you can edify the whole church.

On the “Day of Pentecost” God poured out His Spirit and the believers received the gifts of the Spirit.  Each believer had at least one gift and all the gifts were present in the body of the believers.

Word of Wisdom, Word of Knowledge, Special Faith, Gifts of Healing, Miraculous powers, Discerning of Spirits, Speaking in Tongues, Interpreting Tongues, Serving, Prophesying, Teaching, Encouraging, Giving, Leading and Mercy.

The gifts are for ministering and for the common good of the church body.[26]

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 – Many Gifts – One Spirit

4 There are different kinds of GIFTS, but the same Spirit.

5 There are different kinds of SERVICE, but the same Lord.

6 There are different kinds of WORKING, but the same God works all of them in all men.  Now to each one the manifestation of

THE SPIRIT IS GIVEN FOR THE COMMON GOOD.

Works – God’s Will

It is God’s will that we do good works for others.  Faith without works is a dead faith.  Works do not save; we do not do good works to be saved, we do good works because we are saved.[27]

James 2:20 – Faith without Works is a dead Faith.

20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that

FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD? KJV

Covenant Keeper – God’s Will

It is Gods will that we enter into the covenant He made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  He wants us to become a new creation in Him and to do a good work within us.   He wants our children, who may not even be born yet to be a part of His covenant

It is God’s will that we receive the promise of eternal life and be co-heirs with Jesus Christ.  God keeps His word and His covenant; He does not change.[28]

Genesis 17:7 – God’s Will for our children part of His covenant

7 I WILL ESTABLISH MY COVENANT AS AN EVERLASTING COVENANT between me and you and YOUR DESCENDANTS AFTER YOU

for the GENERATIONS TO COME, to be your God and the God of your DESCENDANTS AFTER YOU. NIV

Confess – God’s Will

It is God’s will that we confess with our mouth to others that we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ for Salvation. - We are no longer under the Law, but under His Grace.[29]

Romans 10:9-10 – It’s God’s will that we confess Jesus is lord.

9 That if you CONFESS WITH YOUR MOUTH, "JESUS IS LORD,"

and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is WITH YOUR MOUTH THAT YOU CONFESS and are saved. NIV

Be Saved – God’s Will

It is God’s will that we know the one true God and His son Jesus Christ; that we hear and receive the “Good News” of the Gospel message.  He wants to reassure us that once we are in His Hands nothing can separate us from Him.  Whoever does not believe is condemned all ready.

It is God’s will that we share the gospel with our friends so that they too may experience eternal life with the Father.[30]

John 3:16-18 – It is God’s will that none perish

16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHALL NOT PERISH but have eternal life.

17 For GOD DID NOT send his Son into the world TO CONDEMN the world, BUT TO SAVE the world through Him.

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned,

but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. NIV

Baptism – God’s Will

It is God’s will that all believers be baptized in water and be FILLED with the Holy Spirit forever.

Baptism footnotes [31]

Acts 10:48 It is God’s will that we be baptized

48 And HE COMMANDED THEM TO BE BAPTIZED in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. KJV

Enter His Presence – God’s Will

He promises to be in our presence when the body is gathered in His name.  We can know the Father by looking at His Son Jesus.[32]

Matthew 18:19-20 – God’s wants to be in your presence.

19 "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven”.

20 “FOR WHERE TWO OR THREE COME TOGETHER IN MY NAME,

THERE AM I WITH THEM."   NIV

Share the Gospel – God’s Will

It is God’s will that we receive power from the Holy Spirit which enables us to witness.  This power allows the Holy Spirit that is in us to flow out to others.  When we share and let “loose” the word of God on earth, the power of the word is let “loose” in heaven.  Likewise when we “bind” the word with our SILENCE, the power of the word is bound up in heaven.

It is God’s will that people be healed spiritually, physically and mentally.   It’s the Holy Spirit that motivates us into His service.  It is God’s desire that we respond immediately in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  He said that we will share the Gospel to more people in our lifetime than He did in His lifetime.[33]

Matthew 28:19-20 – It is God’s will for us to teach the Word

19 Therefore GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations, baptizing them and TEACHING THEM TO OBEY EVERYTHING

I HAVE COMMANDED YOU.  NIV

Will of God – Will of Man

When God created the world, there was only “One Will” in the whole universe.  When Satan rebelled there became “Two Wills”; Satan’s and God’s.  Satan sought to detach man from God; to attach man to himself, thus mankind receive “Satan’s will”.  Satan was successful in detaching man from God, but man had his “own will” and would not attach himself to Satan.

Now there are “Billions of Wills” in the world; that’s why God sent His Son to re-attach us.   The war began against GOD and His greatest creation; “MAN”, who was created in God’s very own image.

There is an Invisible War going on and it’s over us.  Choose Life.

The Take Away

We can know the will of God by studying His Word; here is a partial listing of God’s Will.

It is God’s will that we resist Satan’s temptations. That we renew our mind.  Have a quiet and gentle spirit. Be filled with understanding.

It is His will that we are content and have peace in our life.  He wants us to study His Word and teach each of our family His Word.  We are to Honor Him with our bodies.

It is His will that we forgive others.  Dispense Love and be compassionate. Have wholesome talk. Have an abundant Life with Prosperity.  He wants to give generously and to be healed.

It is His will that we pray about everything, that we become Full of Faith and speak words of Faith.  That we seek the Gifts of the Spirit and put our faith into action through good works/

It is His will that we keep our covenants and Confess our sins; that we be saved and be baptized in water and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

It is His will that we go to Church with other believers and enter into His presence. That we share the Good news of the Gospel Message.

To whom much is given much is expected and once we KNOW the Will of God, the burden comes that we must DO the Will of God.  Faith without good works is a dead faith.
