Chapter 16.2
The Things Which Are The Church Age... The Present
Letters to the Church in Ephesus and Smyrna WARNING
to the leader or Pastor of the Church at Ephesus. Condition: LOSING
THEIR FIRST LOVE. They had not departed from their love of God,
but their devotion to Spiritual things had dwindled; their concern for others
was lacking. Other worldly issues had
taken the forefront. This could be a
condition of our Churches today.
Chapter Two - The Ephesus Letter
Revelation
2:1-3 - "To the
angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who
holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks (back and forth) among the seven golden lamp stands:
2 I know your
deeds, your hard work
and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men,
that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found
them false.
3 You have
persevered (Patience is the “Fruit of the Spirit”) and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. NIV
Ephesus - Ephesos: Greek
meaning; Desirable, a first love...
Represented THE
APOSTOLIC ERA of the First Century Church.
Warning: Danger of the removal of their lampstand
Condition: Lost their first love... They had substituted their LABOR for LOVE
This church is closest to Patmos where
John the writer of the “Revelation” was imprisoned. Ephesus was known as the “SUPREME METROPOLIS OF ASIA”, the
market place of Asia. They had
an excellent harbor, land traffic and a good commercial and banking centers.
The Temple of Diana was considered ONE
OF THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD. The Goddess Diana was
the
patron of all prostitutes and represented fertility and sexuality. The Temple was 425 feet long, 220 feet wide
and 60 feet high with 127 marble pillars.
One of the strong industries was the
production of silver images of the “many-bosomed” Diana and Black Magic
was practiced there.
The
Church was very busy with full calendars and weary workers who would
not put up with the worthless evil people and false teachings. However, labor is not a
substitute for love.
The Christian Church Pastors had been Paul, Apollos, Timothy and John, so they were well taught.
First Love
Revelation 2:4-6 - Yet I hold this against you:
You have forsaken your first love. (Best love... God)
5 Remember (Memories are Course Correctors) the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the
things you did at first. If you do not
repent,
I will come to you and remove your lamp stand from its place.
6 But you have this in your
favor:
You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans,
which I also hate. NIV
Looking at some of the letters,
it seems their hearts had drifted away from caring about others as they had
earlier.[1] They are warned to turn back or their
Church will be removed from His sight.
Did
you see it? You can be doing good things in the
community, food banks, children’s hospitals and going to Church and Christ will
say, “I never
knew you”.[2] It’s your FAITH, not your WORKS.
A bird sings
because he is a bird. He is not a bird
because he sings.
A person does
not become a Christian because of his good works.
He does good
works because he is a Christian.
The removal of the lamp stand affects only
the existence of the Church itself not the believing individual.
NOTE: Interestingly: the lamp stand of the Church at
Ephesus has NOW been removed; the
church is no longer there. Mohammedanism
is the religion there now.
The Nicolaitanes
(Greek; “to conquer the people”) were
a religious splinter group operating under the Christian umbrella, but were indifferent
between truth
and error,
developed the “PRIEST
HIERARCHY”,
a separation of “Clergy” and “Laity” in the church, and had unsound, if not
wicked doctrines, activities and practices which they themselves blessed and
accepted.[3]
God appoints under-Shepard’s to care for the flock and to keep out the
wolves. He did
not appoint church
bosses, special priest or special men
to pray for us or listen to our confession of sins. But you can see that this is where all this
mess started.
Tree of Life
Revelation 2:7 - He who has an ear, let him hear what the
Spirit says to the churches. To him who OVERCOMES
(not
grown weary), I will
give the right to eat from the TREE OF
LIFE, which is in the Paradise of God.
NIV
This message is; whosoever
will listen to the Spirit, will live forever with Christ. When man sinned in the Garden of Eden, he became
separated from the Tree of Life.[4] Jesus has provided
THE WAY back to the Tree of Life; everyone who believes
in Jesus Christ, confesses his sins and turns away from his wicked ways will
eat from the Tree
of Life and live forever.[5]
Judgment #1 – Christ on the Cross
There
are five judgment days[6]... Four more
discussed later.
Judgment of
man’s sins starts with Christ on the Cross[7]
Christ was
declared guilty, suffered and died so that we did not have to.[8]
Smyrna Letter – No Criticism
found.
Revelation 2:8-9 - "To the angel of the church in Smyrna
write: These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and
came to life again.
9 I know your afflictions and your poverty-yet you are rich!
I know the slander of those who say they
are Jews and ARE NOT,
but are a synagogue of Satan.
Smyrna: In the Greek “Myrrh”,
a bruised or crushed
flower of fragrance...
Represented THE PERSECUTION ERA of the First
Century Church.
Warning to the Leader
or Pastor of Smyrna.
Condition: Fear of things to come. They were so
concerned about their conditions, poverty, sufferings, prison, and fear of their lives that they were drifting in their
trust in God to see them through.
Crushing persecution. Myrrh was
an aromatic substance that must be crushed to yield its perfume. When the persecuting Roman government crushed
the Church it gave a “SWEET-SMELLING” savor unto God. Smyrna was known as “The Ornament of
Asia” because of its beauty.
The city was planned by Alexander the
Great and was located 40 miles North of Ephesus and had a very good economy because
for their safe seaport. It was the
center for Emperor
Worship and was overwhelmingly pagan. The main street was called the “Street of Gold”,
at one end stood the TEMPLE OF
ZEUS and
the other end THE TEMPLE
OF CYBELE (the mother of god).
Vine’s dictionary says the SYNAGOGUE OF SATAN[9] was an assembly of people dominated by the
power and activity of Satan that had rejected the Truth. Synagogue
means “To
bring Together” - “an assembly of people”. In my BS, there may NOT have been an
actual “physical assembly”, but were
a category of people who just pretended to be Christians. They attended Church, but did not embraced
His Truth in their everyday lives. This
could apply today in our own church and lives.
Crown of Life
Revelation 2:10 - Do not be afraid of what you are about to
suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and
you will suffer
persecution for TEN DAYS.
Be faithful, even to the point of death,
(Martyred)
and I will give you
the CROWN OF LIFE. NIV
Some scholars think that the TEN DAYS are symbolic of 10
periods of persecution the Church endured:
Under Nero
54ad, Domitian
81ad, Trajan 98ad, Adrian 117ad, Septimius Serveus 193ad, Maximin 235ad, Decius 249ad, Valerian 254ad,
Aurelian
270ad, and Diocletian
384ad.
Who knows, it could be the 10 YEARS of persecution by Emperor Diocletian or just as
it says, just 10 DAYS. In my BS, I
think it means that in God’s Sovereign Plan
by His
grace the time has been limited which
we do not understand why.[10] TEN represents the
Law, Justice.
Satan’s
power is limited and controlled
by God. Satan cannot make a move against
God’s child without God’s express permission. Why would God allow his faithful to be
persecuted? Sometimes God
allows suffering for his children in order for
them to grow spiritually.[11]
The CROWN OF
LIFE[12] is one of Five Crowns available
to the Believer. See the Crowns
Rabbit Trail at the end of Chapter four.
Second Death
Revelation 2:11 - He who has an ear, let him hear what the
Spirit says to the churches. HE WHO
OVERCOMES will not be hurt at all by the SECOND DEATH. NIV

THE FIRST DEATH is a physical death of the body here on earth.
ü THE
SECOND DEATH is the spiritual death in the Lake of Fire[13] RESERVED for those who do not receive the CROWN OF LIFE.
This is NOT symbolism, it is the
literal Truth. I didn’t say it, God did !
Those that are born twice, die only
once.
Those that are born only once will die
twice.
Pergamum (Pergamos) Letter
Revelation 2:12-15 - "To the angel of the church in Pergamum
write: These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.
13 I know where you live-where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain
true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of
Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city-where Satan lives.
14 Nevertheless,
I have a few
things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of
Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols
and committed sexual immorality.
15 Likewise you also have those who hold to
the teaching of the Nicolaitans. NIV
Pergamos in the Greek “a sad
Marriage.” It was wedded to
the state,
Represented
THE ERA OF COMPROMISE of the First
Century Church - Spiritual unfaithfulness
Warning to the leader
or pastor of Pergamum. (Pergaamos)
Condition: Doctrinal compromise - Failure to
provide a clear distinction between Biblical doctrine and the world. Some of the followers were allowing
doctrines of Balaam
and the practices of the Nicolaitans to be mixed with their
Christianity. They could
follow Christ and live in sin too. They now had Spiritual Dictators who promoted themselves instead of promoting
Christ.
Only
this scripture discloses that Satan actually held
court in this town. The
inference is that Believers lived in an extremely evil
environment dominated by satanic
power and persecution, but still remained faithful.
Some manuscripts
even call Pergamum
“Satan’s Seat”.
The Roman Empire
Pergamos was Famous for its great university with a library of 200,000 books. It was the capital city of Asia Minor and
flourished with many palaces, temples and idols. It was
given to idolatry more than all of Asia. Satan’s Throne was
there; Emperor Worship and
mystery cults.

The doctrine of
Balaam
was there; Balaam was a traveling prophet for hire who
led Israel into sin for profit. (Balaam corrupted the Israelites with intermarriage
with pagan women)
ü
The doctrine of the Nicolaitanes; they
made a division between priest and the people; Roman Catholicism.
(Introduced doctrines of
gnostic cults advocating rituals by clergy not by the Priesthood.)
ü
There was a
temple to Octavius Caesar, where once a
year each citizen was required to offer incense and declare that Caesar was
Lord. – Emperor Worship.
ü
There was an alter
to Zeus
that was a wonder to the ancient world – The patron god Aesculapius, the god of
healing was worshiped in the form of a living serpent in his temple.
In A.D.324
Constantine made Christianity the religion of his empire. There was something different about the
Christians, they could be trusted and relied upon. He banished pagans
from his court and gave their post to Christians. – He “bought” the Church. The local Church was now in spiritual
adultery and was no longer the “salt of the earth”. Satan switched his tactics from persecution to protection.
State taxes supported and paid its pastors and the church. Satan was excited.
King Balak tried to entice the Prophet Balaam, a conjurer for hire, to curse Israel.[14] The Angel of God appeared to Balaam
and said, “DON’T DO THIS”. At first reading of the entire account,
Balaam seems like a true prophet of God, BUT he was
false prophet interested
only in the money.
Balaam
could not curse the Israelites, so he led them to intermarry with the heathen
without fear of judgment. [15]
This gave birth to the concept of the marriage of the
Church and Government.
There are people that at first reading seem like Christians, but you
find out different when you see the fruit of their actions - God’s word says, “You shall know
them by their fruits”.[16]
Hidden Manna -
White Stone
Revelation 2:16:17 - Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon
come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the
churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the HIDDEN MANNA. (Jesus is the Bread of Life) I will also give him a WHITE STONE with
a new name written
on it, known only to him who receives it. NIV
Manna
literally means; What is it?[17] It was referred to as Angel’s food[18] and
the bread of
God. It looked like a white
round substance as fine as frost, like a white coriander seed,[19]
and it tasted like wafers made with honey or pastry prepared with oil.
In the wilderness the Israelites were fed a “physical” manna and knew
this meaning of “manna”. A golden pot of
manna was “hidden away” in the Ark of the
Covenant with the Ten
Commandments. God promised to feed them a hidden “Spiritual” manna, the bread of
Life.[20]
A BLACK STONE in a court of law was a sentence
of condemnation,
while a WHITE STONE was an acquittal. Each saint received a new
name that was his title to enter into eternal
Glory.[21]
The Thyatira Letter
Revelation 2:18 - "To the angel of the church in Thyatira
write: These are the words of the Son of
God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and
whose feet are like burnished bronze.

love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more
than you did at first. NIV
Thyatira: Greek meaning “Continual Sacrifice.”
Represented THE CORRUPT CHURCH ERA of the First Century Church
Warning to the leader
or pastor of Thyatira
Condition: Moral compromise - Toleration of sin by some of the followers in
the Church. They embraced pagan philosophy, idol worship, witchcraft and
adultery.
Blazing
fire and bronze; this is a
description of Christ as the righteous Judge.[22]
Thyatira’s famous industry was dyeing
cloth red or purple. Many trade
guilds were in the city and to do business you must belong to one of the
guilds. This was a problem for believers
because of the paganism and immorality in the Guild Life. There was also a temple for “Fortune Telling”.
This church had grown in their works, love, service, faith and patience,
but had false doctrine and false teachers... They had the worst
disgraceful religious system every devised for the New Testament Church, The
Papal Church – Catholicism.
Popery shut out Christ as the head of the church. Rome led the way for Christians to follow
Mary instead of Christ. Mary, Queen of
Heaven to worship idols, the images of saints.
The doctrine of TRAN-SUBSTITUTION was
instituted... that each time the Priest performed mass the wafer
became the actual body of Christ and
the wine became His Literal blood.
Rome’s
doctrines, titles, rites, ceremonies, vestments, holy days and dogmas, are all
of pagan origin. See the Catholic Church Rabbit Trail at the end of
this Chapter.
Jezebel
Revelation 21:20 - Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate
that woman JEZEBEL, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual
immorality and the eating of food
sacrificed
to idols.
In
my BS, Jezebel here is probably SYMBOLIC of the REAL JEZEBEL who lived during Old Testament Times... She was an idol worshiper,
practiced
witchcraft and persecuted the
Prophets of God.[23]
She was one of the MOST
EVIL CHARACTERS in the Old Testament.[24]
Revelation 2:21-23 - I have given her time to repent of her immorality,
but she is unwilling. 22 So I will cast her on
a bed of suffering, and
I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely,
unless they repent of her ways.
23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know
that
I am he who searches hearts and minds, and
I WILL REPAY EACH OF YOU ACCORDING TO YOUR DEEDS.
Did you see it? This scripture is NOT talking about being unfaithful and having SEX outside of marriage, but is SYMBOLICE of Israel,[25]
Gods special people being
misled, being
unfaithful
and whoring
after other Gods. [26]
Deep Secrets
Revelation 2:24 - Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira,
to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan's so-called
deep secrets (I will not impose any other burden on you):
These deep secrets[27]
are obtained by communicating with the dead[28]….
God says don’t
do it, so it must be possible to do so. A “spirit guide” is none other than a servant of Satan,
who can TRANSFORM or SHAPE SHIFT himself into an
angel of
light.[29] He becomes whoever
you desire him to be.
Hold On
Revelation 2:25-29 - Only HOLD
ON to what you have until I come.
26 To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give
authority over the nations-
27`He will rule them (The millennial Reign of Christ) with an iron scepter; he will dash them to pieces like pottery'- just as I have
received authority from my Father.
28 I will also give him (Believers who will share in) the MORNING STAR. (Jesus)
29 He who has an ear let him hear what the Spirit says to the
churches NIV.
There were TRUE BELIEVERS that were being called out of Catholicism,
and were told to hold on till the Messiah comes
again. Jesus is the MORNING
STAR[30] and promises Himself in the heart of the over
comer.
Catholic
Church – Rabbit Trail
Almost every Sunday I watch Father
Fredric a Catholic
Priest on Satellite. If he didn’t occasionally mention the Pope
or the Catholic
Church, It would not even occur to me that he was not Protestant. The Catholic Church has
the same Gospel
Message as the Protestants do, except they also have traditions
and doctrines
who’s fence post do not line up with the Bible’ fence
post.
I have no agenda except to
write what my BS
understands the fence post as
planted by the
Word.
If the fence
post that I plant in my Belief System do
not line up with the Bible’s fence post,
then either the
Bible is wrong or I am wrong.
The Catholic Church points to the Virgin Mary to be the mediator between God and man, reducing Jesus to
infant status. They pray to images of
Saints, they “sign” the cross, have rosary beads for rote prayers, confessions
to Priest and prayers for the dead. The
Bible says, DO NOT have any graven
images, it says Jesus is our ONLY mediator
between God and man, and when you are dead, its’ all over. No prayers or money paid will change the
destination of the dead.
Immaculate Conception refers to the
conception of Mary inside the womb of her VIRGIN
mother thus preserving
her from sin and is the “co-redeemer” of man along with her son Jesus.[31]
Catholic Catechism: The priest really and truly forgive sins by virtue of
power given him by Jesus Christ. The pope is not only the representative of Jesus Christ, but
he is Jesus Christ himself, hidden in a veil of flesh.
Catholic Ten Commandments – The second
commandment forbidding graven images is omitted; with the 10th commandment
split into two, making it ten again.[32] (See Wikipedia)

the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay
attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and
the MORNING STAR rises in your hearts

speak against the Most High and oppress his saints and try to CHANGE the set times and the laws
